The International Film Festival aka the Cannes Film Festival is a highly coveted annual, international celebration of cinema all across the globe. The event held in Cannes, France, is aimed at previewing upcoming movies of all genres, including documentaries.
Film industries worldwide are buzzing with what titles might make it to the Cannes slate for this year as the 77th edition commences on May 14 and concludes on May 25. Some upcoming projects to be on the lookout for are potential selections like Sean Baker’s sex workers romantic comedy Anora, David Cronenberg’s horror thriller The Shrouds starring big names like Diane Kruger and Guy Pearce, and Chocobar, Argentinian filmmaker Lucrecia Martel’s documentary about the environmental activist Javier Chocobar.
Other arrivals to the list could be animations like Pixar’s Inside Out 2 and Paramount’s family fantasy, If. Spanish contenders for Cannes are mostly rising stars. Movies including dramas like Glimmer, romances like Morlaix, and thrillers like A Haunted Heart are waiting on the sidebars of Cannes to steal the limelight.
Asian contenders for the festival include Cannes regular Kiyoshi Kurosawa with his French-language thriller Serpent’s Path, an adaptation of his 1998 Japanese feature of the same name. From Korea, Oh Seung-uk’s Revolver is a frontrunner – it is the story of a former police officer out for revenge after serving a wrongful prison sentence.
