It’s been 7 weeks in a row now that SS Rajamouli’s epic action drama ‘RRR’ has been among Netflix’s global top 10 non-English films list. But it’s not just RRR, there have been few other Indian titles too that have made it to this list and for a quite a time now.
In the last week of June 27, other than RRR (#7) it was Ayushmann Khurrana’s ‘Anek’ (#2) and Kartik Aaryan’s ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ (#3) that were part of the list. Prior to this in June 20 week it was ‘BB 2’, ‘RRR’ and ‘CBI 5: The Brain’, and in addition to these titles the June 13 week also included Sivakarthikeyan’s ‘Don’, taking the count to four Indian titles in Netflix’s global top 10 non-English film list in that week.
Moreover, if we look at the stats for the month of May and June, a minimum of three Indian titles have consistently been on the non-English films global top 10 list of Netflix. On the other hand there was barely one Indian film on the list for the month of March and April.
One other thing to consider here is that most of the titles like ‘Radhe Shyam’, ‘Thar’, ‘Beast’, ‘Jersey’, ‘Toolsidas Junior’, ‘Jana Gana Man’, ‘CBI 5: The Brain’, ‘Don’, ‘Dasvi’ and ‘Anek’ that found spot in this list were mostly viewed in African and Asian countries.
It was only films like ‘RRR’, ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ and ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ that found audience in otter continents. While the latter two couldn’t retain these new viewers for long and came back to finding fans in Africa and Asia, it was RRR that stood its ground firmly for a good period of two weeks of entertaining streamers worldwide in true sense.
Anyways, this recent trend of Indian dominance on a global level gives a big boost to Indian cinema that is now finding and impressing audience across the world and isn’t just limited to screens within the country. A recognition like this is a much awaited feat for the entire Indian film industry, both Hindi and regional.
