The 2023 edition of the prestigious Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) has just ended its exciting two-week run in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. And the coveted People’s Choice Award at the 48th TIFF was given to the comedy drama movie ‘American Fiction’ starring Jeffrey Wright. While the Documentary Award and Midnight Madness Award have been bagged by ‘Mr. Dressup: The Magic of Make-Believe’ and ‘Dicks the Musica’, respectively.
Amidst a host of eagerly anticipated world premieres, some Indian films were also showcased at Toronto International Film Festival. But has any Indian film won at this year’s TIFF? And the answer is: Yes, Indian cinema has made a mark at a reputed international festival audience once again.
Jayant Digambar Somalkar’s Marathi film ‘A Match’ aka ‘Sthal’, which was showcased at the Discovery segment at TIFF 2023, has bagged NETPAC Award. This award is given to honour the best film from the Asia Pacific region at TIFF. The movie revolves around a woman named Savita, who must face difficult and uncomfortable questions from her suitors for an arranged marriage.
Furthermore, the Platform Prize, which is awarded to films of “high artistic merit that also demonstrate a strong directorial vision” has also been bagged by the Indian film ‘Dear Jassi’ directed by Tarsem Singh. Set in the 1990s period, the film follows the story of a girl named Jassi, who falls for a likable rickshaw driver Mithu on a trip to Jagraon, Punjab. But their love story faces a setback because Jassi must go back to Canada with her mother.
Moreover, another Indian film, which has impressed the TIFF 2023 audiences in a big way is the highly anticipated Indian extreme action movie ‘Kill’. The film ended up being the first runner-up for the People’s Choice Midnight Madness Award category, which was finally won by ‘Dicks the Musica’.
Despite not winning, ‘Kill’, directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, had received a wonderful response from the TIFF audience when it was showcased at the fest. The action-drama movie follows the story of a commando named Amrit (Lakshya), whose lover Tulika (Tanya Maniktala) is being coerced by her family for an arranged marriage. But when the train in which Tulika is travelling gets attacked by ruthless bandits, it’s up to Amrit and his fellow commando to save the train passengers from the violent attackers and save the girl.
