The directors of “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” faced a critical challenge with the film’s second act. And it was all because of the Indian version of Spider-Man we know as Pavitr Prabhakar who resides in Mumbattan. Well, all the trouble was worth it as the film is creating enormous box office records and is a massive success in every way.
In a sequence where Miles Morales enters a different dimension called Mumbattan, they realized something was missing. The Indian members of the animation team pointed out that the character Pavitr didn’t feel authentic or aspirational.
Despite the sequence being far along in production, the team halted work and assembled a writers room of Indian and Indian American writers. With their input, Pavitr’s character was reimagined. He became a joyous and unshakably optimistic character, highlighting his natural talent and charisma as a Spider-Man. This change further intensified Miles’ own anxieties about his abilities.
The filmmakers are proud of the collaboration that led to the authentic portrayal of Pavitr. It reflects their openness to criticism and good ideas from various sources. The process involved extensive problem-solving to ensure that the character represented a specific part of the world accurately.
This experience with Pavitr was just one example of the intricate creative decisions the filmmakers had to make for “Across the Spider-Verse.” The decision to have Miles travel across the Spider-Verse expanded the narrative complexity, requiring new visual languages for entire worlds. They also explored incorporating live-action elements and used the multiverse concept to deepen Miles’ connection to his heroism. Additionally, they had to set up his journey for the upcoming conclusion of the trilogy, “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” which is already in production with all three directors involved.
