Theatres in Kerala do not have night shows at the moment. Various theatres in Tamil Nadu were forced to close due to the rising number of omicron cases. The state of Karnataka does not allow films to be played after 10 pm, due to the rise in Covid-19 cases and its variants. And now, theatres in Mumbai are being forced to shut down after highly anticipated Indian films ‘RRR’ and ‘Jersey’ have pushed their release date for a later time.
Covid-19. Omicron. And now Deltacron. With more and more affected cases with even varying versions of the coronavirus, film production companies are not ready to try their luck in theatres, especially after how theatres in India were forced to shut down during the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. States around the country have started to implement curfews with many even forcing cinema owners to shut down theatres by 10 pm.
All of the above reasons and the losses that theatre owners are still incurring since the start of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 are causing major theatres and theatre chains in India to shut down. The maintenance cost, as well as taxes, are eating into the recent profits that the cinema made from films like ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home‘, ‘Pushpa’ and ‘Kurup‘ – hence cinema halls are shutting down.
While the variant cases have been managed by the health officials so far, we do not know how long the variations can be managed or how long will it take for a new “unmanageable one” to surface. For the time being, we have no clue how the situation is going to lean towards, but it looks like theatre owners are taking matters into their own hands for now.
