Calling Arcane one of the greatest Netflix shows ever is an understatement, because it was more than that. Rarely do shows come along and take over the world by storm like Arcane did when it premiered in November 2021. It ranked first on Netflix’s Top 10 chart in over 50 countries within a week of its global premiere. Its second season outperformed its critically acclaimed predecessor, achieving the same feat in over 60 countries during its first week of release. Now, its showrunners have confirmed that several spin-offs are in the works.
Despite being a tremendous success and visual masterpiece, Arcane concluded with Season 2 in November 2024. However, its showrunners have teased that the second season was definitely not the end of the Arcane universe.
In a recent interview with Discussing Film, showrunners Christian Linke and Alex Yee talked in detail about their plans for the upcoming Arcane spin-offs. They admitted to not fully exploring the stories of several prominent League of Legends characters featured in the show, including Jinx, Vi, Silco, Jayce, Viktor, and Ekko. They also shed light on the untouched dynamics of the relationship between Mel and Ambessa.
“What happened between Mel and Ambessa, of course, is mentioned in the book (Ambessa: Chosen of the Wolf), as well. There is so much left to explore, to a certain extent. You need only to ask, ‘What do you want to focus on?’ We’ll see, because we also want to venture into new spaces with new characters. It really boils down to who among us has a need to see something come together and be fleshed out. That’s what we really focus on.”
Ambessa Medarda, in particular, was one of the standout characters in Season 2. And the recently released prequel novel about her origins, Ambessa: Chosen of the Wolf, written by C. L. Clark, could serve as source material for one of the Arcane spin-offs based on the mighty, cunning, and brutal war general from Noxus.
Like the novel, the Arcane spin-off about Ambessa could delve into her origin story—her rise to power within the Medarda clan, a prestigious family renowned for its pursuit of glory, and the political intrigue and betrayals she faces as she seeks to become its leader. We could even witness the early years of Mel Medarda, Ambessa’s daughter and a prominent character in Arcane, and the complex, often strained relationship between the two.
