International Documentary Association aka IDA, a more than 40-year-old LA-based organization honors non-fictions feature and short documentary films from across the globe. And IDA has now revealed the list of the shortlisted films comprising 17 feature documentary films and 25 short documentaries and it also includes three Indian titles. And the winners of the 2023 edition of IDA Documentary Awards will be revealed on 11th December 2023. Here are the three Indian documentary films which are contenders for IDA Documentary Awards 2023.
Against the Tide (Feature Documentary)
Sarvnik Kaur’s documentary film revolves around two friends Rakesh and Ganesh, who work as fishermen in Mumbai. While one of them deploys traditional fishing methods, the other one uses a more modern approach of deep-sea fishing. But both these men must deal with their own problems as a rift begins to develop in their friendship.
While We Watched (Feature Documentary)
Set amidst the backdrop of Indian media and journalism, the documentary focuses on veteran reporter Ravish Kumar and chronicles his working days as he navigates through various challenges in the field of journalism. The film had won awards at the reputed Toronto International Film Festival and the Busan International Film Festival. ‘While We Watched’ currently holds 90% critics’ score on reviews aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes based on 21 reviews.
Raat: Night Time in Small Town India (Short Documentary)
The short documentary film focuses on a group of men and women from the states of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Jharkhand as they capture the night lives of small-town India.
