All cinephiles should ardently go through the filmography of legends like Satyajit Ray and Ritwik Ghatak. But in these big names, one more big name is somewhere lost in oblivion. Mrinal Sen is one of the finest filmmakers the nation has ever seen. But his films are not talked about very much today.
‘Interview‘, the first film of his Calcutta trilogy, came out in 1971. It was a commercial and critical success. The film has strong reflections of Sen’s political and social anguish and is a very critical commentary of the then society.
Interview tells the story of a young man who is looking for a new high salary job and he has an interview. The interview is only a formality but he has to be nicely suited up for it. The laundry workers have gone for a strile and Ranju, the man, fails to fetch his suit. He brings a suit from his rich friend, but it gets lost in a bus ride. After everything goes wrong, Ranju goes to the interview in traditional attire, a dhoti and punjabi. He does not get the job, and is left frustrated by the system.
Sen captures the middle class attitude with his typical genius and awe inspiring visuals. The movie marks the rise of Ranjit Mallick. It has actors like Karuna Chakroborty and many kore. The music is highly suitable to the movie. And the visuals are just amazing. If anybody aspires to be a filmmaker, or just happens to be an avid cinephile, one must go through this movie very closely. ‘Interview’ is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
