If you guys love Robert Kirkman’s Invincible comic books and have read plenty of them, then you must know by now that a far greater threat is looming over Mark Grayson’s (Steven Yeun) shoulders. Conquest’s (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) actions were just a teaser of what fans should expect from an all-out war between Earth and the Viltrumites, the foundation of which could be laid in the upcoming Season 4. As for this season’s ultimate villain, we can expect Thragg to emerge as the primary antagonist in the next season.
Who is Thragg? Created by Robert Kirkman and Ryan Ottley, Thragg is the Grand Regent of the Viltrumite Empire. He embodies the most aggressive and dominant traits of Viltrumite culture. Not only is he a brutal fighter, but he is also a highly authoritative leader who never hesitates to take extreme measures. The character holds a significant place in the Invincible comic book history, which could be explored in the forthcoming seasons.
Kirkman has confirmed that a talented actor has been cast as Thragg for Invincible Season 4, with the name set to be revealed in the coming days. It will be interesting to see whether Thragg makes a cameo appearance or plays a much larger role in the upcoming season.
But adding Thragg into the mix certainly raises concerns for Mark, given that he, the rest of the superheroes, and Cecil’s (Walton Goggins) advanced army are Earth’s only protectors against the brutal and merciless Viltrumites. Even though their population has drastically declined, a single Viltrumite can cause unthinkable, uncontrollable, and massive destruction—just like Conquest.
Now, here’s the main question we should focus on: Why is the Viltrum Empire so fixated on Earth? The Viltrumites had been keeping an eye on the planet long before Mark became a massive threat to them. Why is that? Well, we might have just found the perfect explanation.
The Invincible comics reveal that Thragg’s lineage usurped the Viltrumite throne, while Nolan’s family is the true royal bloodline. This revelation, combined with Conquest’s mission to eliminate Nolan’s family and destroy Earth, suggests that Thragg fears Mark’s potential as a threat.
Mark endured one of the most brutal beatings a superhero has ever taken from a villain in the history of superhero projects in the Season 3 finale. Conquest was undeniably more powerful than Mark. However, thanks to Atom Eve and her newly unlocked powers, Mark was able to defeat Conquest. Still, their battle took a heavy toll on him, ultimately forcing him to unleash his darker, more ruthless side.
Despite being overpowered by Conquest on multiple occasions, Mark still managed to hold his ground, which speaks volumes about his resilience and character. This certainly solidifies Invincible as a real and worthy threat in Thragg’s eyes. Let’s see what kind of story unfolds in Invincible Season 4. Stay tuned for more updates.
