The streaming rights of IPL have been sold and now it ends the monopoly of Walt Disney. However, it does not mean that there is a new monopoly.
If you are unaware then BCCI is all happy by selling the digital and TV rights of IPL for a sum of a whopping Rs 44,075 Crores.
Before we begin let’s clarify that the TV rights were sold to Disney Star for Rs 23,575 Crore. However, Reliance owned Viacom bagged the digital rights for a sum of Rs 20,500 Crores.
It means that IPL will continue to broadcast on Star channels but those who want to stream it digitally must get ready with the subscription of Voot Select.
You might be aware that Voot Select is soon bringing a sports documentary called “Bando Mein Tha Dam” on Border Gavaskar Trophy which is India’s greatest win at Test cricket.
With this, Voot has firmly strengthened itself as the sports-centred OTT which is going to give a full dose of fun for the cricket fanatics in India.
If you remember then IPL is one of the biggest factors Disney+Hotstar enjoyed a monopoly on the Indian OTT industry.
Of course, their pricing was a big factor which aided the same.
But there are some problems. Voot Select’s annual plan currently costs 499₹. Even if there is a dramatic spike in the number of subscribers then also Voot Select will have to depend on ads for generating a decent revenue.
Since we don’t get many direct to OTT releases on Voot Select, there isn’t a long list of benefits the subscription of Voot Select would provide.
So things are tough but only if Voot works on better series/films then it will have a chance to survive and dominate the OTT industry.
