Marvel Studios has yet to find a worthy successor to Iron Man since his ultimate sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. The problem with finding a replacement for Tony Stark in the MCU is that there is no other character in the franchise who is capable of filling Robert Downey Jr’s iconic character’s shoes. Many fans have considered Riri Williams, aka Ironheart, as a perfect replacement for Iron Man. However, both these characters are noticeably different from each other in terms of beliefs and personas. The only thing that connects them is their love for armour technologies. Ironheart is a completely different character from Iron Man. This scenario gives a golden opportunity for Marvel Studios to provide Riri with a better character arc than Tony through the Disney+ Ironheart series. Let’s find out how!
We cannot ignore fans’ concerns about the Ironheart series, as many are wondering if Dominique Thorne’s take on the titular character would live up to the legacy left behind by Robert Downey Jr or not. But we need to think about this from a different perspective. Does Ironheart really have to replace Iron Man in the MCU? Things would work out way better if we get a fresh take on Ironheart. This scenario may pave the way for a different and better character arc for Riri Williams compared to Tony Stark’s.
Thorne received little screen time in Wakanda: Forever. But Ryan Coogler succeeded in distinguishing her from Iron Man in terms of origin story and personality. Tony realised what was right after he got kidnapped by terrorists in the 2008 film. He discovered that horrible people were also using his weapons and technologies, ultimately forcing him to scrap Stark Industries’ weapons manufacturing division for good. Sometime later, he made the armour to protect the people and his loved ones from the villains he inadvertently created. He was never meant to be a hero. In other words, we can say that his character arc focused more on his efforts of atonement for all the mistakes he committed.
But that’s not the case with Riri Williams. She actually wants to do something good. This is why Wakanda sought her aid in the Black Panther’s sequel to battle against Namor. Riri focused more on protecting the innocent people of Wakanda from the attacks of Namor’s army rather than aiding the Dora Milaje. In addition, she built a vibranium detector to aid people. Moreover, we saw her blending the Wakandan technology and her vibranium detector to upgrade her mechanised suit. And her first act of heroism involved protecting the innocent people of Wakanda. This shows that she actually cares about doing good work and helping the ones who need help, establishing herself as a completely different character from Tony Stark.
The duo of regret and trauma played an important role in shaping up Iron Man’s origin story. On the other hand, Ironheart’s origin story is cultivated through her compassion and bravery. Let’s see how her future turns out in the MCU. Stay tuned for more updates.
