Fans of the OG thriller and mystery genre were in for a joyride with Benedict Cumberbatch’s rendition of the iconic detective Sherlock Holmes in the superhit series ‘Sherlock’.
Created by British novelist Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Detective Holmes has been played by numerous actors like Robert Downey Jr, Wil Ferrell, Johnny Lee Miller, and more throughout pop culture history. Co-creator of the hit series starring Cumberbatch, Mark Gatiss, recently stated his interest in adapting the show for the big-screen. Surprisingly, this was not the first time!
With a whopping 9.1 IMDb rating, the series was quick to become a fan favorite as viewers widely appreciated Cumberbatch’s portrayal of the brilliant investigator as one of the best among numerous others. Surprisingly however, in response to Gatiss’s remarks, many viewers expressed their dislike toward the motion of the series being adapted as a feature film.
The majorly cited reason: a fear of ruining the original legacy of the brilliance of the performances and the show itself. Apart from Cumberbatch’s show, the most famous ‘Sherlock’ franchise is undoubtedly Robert Downey Jr’s ‘Sherlock Holmes’ film series. Both installments of the series were widely appreciated, but not as much as the 2010’s show.
While other reasons like ruining a perfect ending, and rushing the plot to fit the time constraints of a feature have fans sweating over the possibility of an adaptation, there have been no comments from the cast members or any official announcements.
Well, as we wait alongside you for further information, we hope nothing tarnishes the beautiful legacy of ‘Sherlock’, the show!
