It seems like the Bengali industry is right now too much focused on recreating Shakespeare’s drama, and Anirban Bhattacharya is the flag bearer of this agenda.
“Talmar Romeo Juliet” a modern retailing of the classic play, set in an imaginary village Talma, the story revolves around the love, deceit, and tragedy they are going to face.
And, to nobody’s surprise Anirban Bhattacharya is the creative director of this series as well.
Earlier this year, directed by Arna Mukhopadhyay, “Athhoi” was released which was the retailing of Shakespeare’s “Othello”, and the pioneer of all these was “Mandaar” which was the retailing of “Macbeth”.
Surely we can see the Shakespearean saga going on in the industry.
But doesn’t it feel similar to the Bollywood trilogy we already have.
Directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, “Maqbool” released in 2003 was the retailing of Macbeth, “Omkara” released in 2006 was the retailing of Othello, and in 2014 we got “Haider” retailing of Hamlet.
And this trinity is one of the most extraordinary and well received projects of Bollywood.
But, now with all these Bengali adaptations of Shakespeare, the question arises are they trying to follow what Bhardwaj has already done?
Although, the storyline of every single adaptation is different, still it feels like thrice ripped out from reality.
The Shakespearean saga Anirban Bhattacharya is creating is gathering an audience who wants to see what they are cooking.
But, every single project, be it “Mandaar” or “Athhoi” received a very mixed reaction from the audience.
Now it’s time to see whether “Talmar Romeo Juliet” satisfies the viewers or not , because it’ll be streaming on Hoichoi.
