Anurag Kashyap is a motor mouth these days. The genius who once made films like Gangs of Wasseypur and Ugly just makes bold statements these days. We are concerned because the latest statement is in regards to OTT.
He said about OTT: “Now what they’re doing is worse than television. Now you go in there, and they want to dumb you down. At the end of the day, all these companies, whether it’s Netflix or Amazon or Apple, they’re coming to India because data is the new oil. They want to reach out to everyone, they don’t want to offend anyone. They don’t want to create art or cinema, they’re creating content.”
Now that statement is true. There is no denying that the platforms are absolutely not interested in making experimental artistic cinema. They are chasing formulaic content that is in trend. For instance, we rarely come across something like Khauf, which is an amazing series regarding fear. On the other hand, we are overburdened with things like Jewel Thief and Hai Junoon, which either fit the formula or don’t make sense at all.
Anurag Kashyap is not a struggling director. Even if OTT platforms are rejecting his ideas then he has all the apparatus to launch his series/film on a pay-per-view model. At this point, after directing mediocre films like “Almost Pyaar with DJ Mohabbat” and “Dobaraa”, he sounds like a new version of Kangana Ranaut, whose films are not working and the only way they are making headlines is outrageous statements.
It is painful to see someone like him in this state. Let’s hope he finds redemption in the South Indian industries where he plans to settle.
