One of the key aspects that made Marvel so popular and successful is how they had cracked the trick to blend humor and storytelling seamlessly. But this ‘need’ to infuse comedy into every Marvel movie affecting the storytelling angle and stagnating MCU?
The last big theatrical release Marvel had was ‘Thor: Love and Thunder‘. Among the problems many had with the film, the most common one was how the humor seemed forced as if every scene had to be funny or have a laugh-out-loud ending. The compulsive need to insert humor to continue the light tone set by the previous films, into those scenes that did not need it, is the criticism fans have against the film franchise.
And what does Marvel do? They announce that the anticipated team-up movie Avengers 5 will be written by Jeff Loveness, a writer whose credits are majorly comedy mainly for TV like Jimmy Kimmel Live!
The writer is currently working on another Marvel project, ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’. Loveness writing the screenplay for Ant-Man is a welcome proposal since he is a very successful comedy writer and the characters and the movie are known for the goofy and funny performances and humor-filled screenplay. Whether he is the best person for Avengers 5 is what many are concerned about.
Avengers 5 like the previous team-ups would potentially have the superheroes fighting against even stronger foes than before. With stakes bigger, if the movie becomes a comedy that has superheroes instead of a superhero story with situational comedy, the movie would fall flat on its face, like Thor 4. Even Eternals had some bad jokes that could have been avoided, with the Indian valet Karun( Harish Patel) being the only consistent source of genuine humor.
Interestingly, the now star directors the Russo Brothers who gave us ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’ too majorly worked in humor before Marvel had signed them on to direct ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’. While Marvel may have stumbled a little as of late, they are still renowned for getting lesser-known talents and giving them bigger budgets and making blockbusters. Let’s give them and Loveness a fair chance with ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’ and hope Avengers 5 doesn’t become the big-budget unfunny comedy sketch ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ turned out to be.
