Recent events, including Variety’s bombshell report and Kevin Feige putting a creative overhaul on many of the future MCU projects, have raised concerns of Marvel fans about the future of Avengers: The Kang Dynasty. Many are wondering if Feige’s team has cancelled the fifth Avengers project or not. Burying Avengers 5 will not only change the events of Avengers: Secret Wars but will also end up changing the planned conclusion of Phase Six.
Kang was set to be the next big villain after Thanos. The roots of his MCU arc were first witnessed in Disney+ Loki Season 1, thanks to his variant, He Who Remains. The character’s real version made its MCU debut through Quantumania, which failed to perform well at the global box office. Then, we watched Victor Timely in Loki Season 2. However, Kang’s future in the MCU looks uncertain, as a lot depends upon the verdict of his ongoing legal battle.
It seems like Marvel has started planning to divert its attention from Kang. We all know that director Destin Daniel Cretton is no longer attached to Avengers 5. His removal will significantly change the film’s creative direction. But it will not bury the project for good. This decision must have arisen due to Cretton focusing more on other projects, like Shang-Chi 2, about which we know very little.
Another thing that indicates that Marvel is moving away from Kang the Conqueror is the number of times the character has been discussed in the MCU projects. Only two projects after Endgame (2019) have discussed the character or its variants to great lengths, Quantumania and the Loki series. Apart from these two, other projects had completely different storylines with no connection to the Kang storyline.
It is not like Marvel cannot deal with the loss of Kang. The character’s exit may result in the addition of Doctor Doom to the MCU. Doom is rumoured to be the antagonist of MCU’s Fantastic Four reboot. And we have nearly three years to get Avengers 5 in theatres globally. It means the studio has plenty of time to make things right with the ongoing phase and its successor, Phase Six.
Deadpool 3 is the only MCU flick that will come out next year. On the other hand, Thunderbolts and Captain America: Brave New World have been pushed back to 2025. This scenario gives Marvel a lot of time to modify its future stories and projects, a scenario that will ultimately modify The Kang Dynasty’s climax. Stay tuned for more updates.
