Moments after Avengers helmers Joe and Anthony Russo and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige revealed that Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr is returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, fans started speculating about how Marvel would explain RDJ’s return as the prominent villain. One of these speculations is linked to the latest Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman starrer, Deadpool & Wolverine.
Hundreds of interesting fan theories have popped up on the internet regarding RDJ’s Doctor Doom. Some say the actor’s version of the popular Marvel villain will be an evil variant of Tony Stark who used technology and sorcery to become Doctor Doom, while others suggest he can be a Doombot.
Plus, some believe it doesn’t matter if Downey plays the character in Avengers: Doomsday as Doom cannot remove his mask from his face. In the comics, Doom (in his arrogance) donned his newly forged iron face mask before it fully cooled, causing massive irreparable damage to his face. This way, fans won’t be able to see RDJ’s face for the majority of Avengers: Doomsday.
SPOILER WARNING!
If you guys have watched Deadpool & Wolverine, then you must know about the ‘Anchor Being’ theory. The film hailed Logan (Wolverine) as the anchor being of Earth-10005. With his death, Earth-10005’s timeline slowly started vanishing. According to some fans, this theory can also explain Downey’s return as Doctor Doom in the MCU. Many believe that Tony Stark was the anchor being of Earth-616, the Sacred Timeline. His heroic sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame results in the slow destruction of the Sacred Timeline. As a result, the Avengers decide to bring a Stark variant into Earth-616. They soon realise he’s not Stark but he is actually Victor Von Doom, aka Doctor Doom.
There’s no denying that it seems like a plausible theory. But we should not expect Marvel to strictly follow Deadpool & Wolverine’s ‘anchor being’ concept. Given the scale of Doomsday as well as Secret Wars, Marvel will surely give a stronger and more believable reason behind Doctor Doom’s entry into the Sacred Timeline. Only time will tell more about this scenario. Stay tuned for more updates.
