Finally, after many ages Spider-Man 4 has received some big updates. The upcoming Tom Holland starrer has found its helmer, Destin Daniel Cretton, who is best known to helm Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The Hollywood Reporter first broke this news.
Peter Parker’s solo adventures in the Marvel Cinematic Universe were directed by Jon Watts, whose recent collaboration with George Clooney and Brad Pitt, Wolfs, opened to mixed critical response at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The last solo Spidey flick was Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Moreover, MCU’s Spider-Man franchise scribes, Erik Sommers and Chris McKenna, will return to write the forthcoming fourth entry. More information about the project is expected to come out in late 2024.
This scenario raises a very important question for us: Is Destin Daniel Cretton the right man to direct Spider-Man 4?
Before Cretton, directors like Sam Raimi (Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man movies) and the duo who helmed Ms. Marvel, Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah, were in talks to direct Spider-Man 4. But in the end, Cretton got the job, and he is the perfect man to do it! Why? Well, not only did he expertly use the well-known MCU formula of action plus humor in his Shang-Chi flick, but he also gave the protagonist a proper character development. The film also benefited immensely from plenty of stylish action sequences. These qualities would certainly come in handy for Spider-Man 4.
Cretton has risen to a prominent position within the MCU. Initially slated to helm Avengers: The Kang Dynasty, Marvel Studios made a decision to scrap that project and replace it with Avengers: Doomsday.
Cretton’s selection for Spider-Man 4 shows Kevin Feige has not lost his faith in him. The Shang-Chi helmer could give a new direction to Peter Parker’s story in the MCU, who was left on his own after the events of No Way Home. Cretton could bring out more of Marvel’s realistic, physical and ground-level storylines and action in the forthcoming Spider-Man project. Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned for more updates.
