Popular actors being directors is a habit of Southern cinema right from its inception. Tamil actor Dhanush is its latest example. An actor par excellence where his presence as a national award winner and Hollywood feat are the golden letters of his portfolio. Along with this, the person is a well-known screenwriter, lyricist, vocalist, and content-loving producer.
The metamorphosis from on-screen to behind the screen as a director was an unpredictable costume worn by this actor. But is his filmography as a role of director satisfactory? That is something to be discussed about.
Two films have been released by Director Dhanush which include ‘Paa Paandi’ (2017) and ‘Raayan’ (2024) respectively. The former one was comparatively smaller in budget. However, the movie was a great commercial success and received high critical acclaim. The genre was of a comedy-drama type and it spoke an unusual story with a retrospective and romantic track. The latter was an action-drama thriller that spoke about conflict in relationships in much more gore and violent language. Though it had several flaws like weak writing, the performances and music composition received positive responses from the audiences.
The upcoming movie ‘Nilavuku En Mel Ennadi Kobam’ (Eng. Girl, why is the moon angry with me?) or ‘NEEK’ is expected to be a young romantic-comedy flick which may be entirely different from the above-discussed movies. This will be co-written and produced by the director himself. This movie might discuss a teenage love story and is expected to be released in theatres on the 21st of December.

As per the recent announcement by Wunderbar Films, Dhanush is expected to direct a movie that might be a romantic thriller flick, temporarily named ‘D52’ which also remarks the actor’s 52nd film which is hoped to feature actor Nitya Menen as the female lead and actor Arun Vijay as the antagonist.
