Salute‘ is a very highly anticipated Malayalam film which will release in theatres in a few days, on 12th January 2022, to be precise. Well not anymore, according to the latest reports. The Omicron variant of the Covid-19 virus has hit multiple South Indian states quite hard and this has led to many films postponing their release dates. It looks like the Dulquer Salmaan starrer will also be following the same route, with the official announcement expected any day now. There had been a few direct-to-OTT whispers, but it seems that the creative heads behind the film only want a theatrical release for now.
Dulquer Salmaan, the film’s lead and producer, has been having some tough luck for a while now – meaning almost 2 years. The actor had just dropped ‘Kannum Kannum Kollaiyadithaal’, a good Tamil romance comedy heist film, in theatres before the coronavirus pandemic cut the film’s box office numbers short. He then had to wait for the coronavirus pandemic to reach manageable levels before he could release his highly anticipated film, ‘Kurup’, in theatres – which took almost 20 months. His luck seemed to have turned with the ‘Kurup’s’ reception around the gone but now it looks like Omicron is here to ruin his first outing as a police officer on screen.
Still, it is not all bad news. The cop thriller has been selected for the 51st International Film Festival Rotterdam. The latest edition of the film festival will be held in the Netherlands starting from January 26 to February 6. According to some reports, Rosshan Andrrews and Dulquer have been praised by critics, for the film’s direction and on-screen performance, respectively.
The theatrical release postponement for ‘Salute’ is still not fully confirmed yet. While the reports that have been surrounding this topic has been quite aggressive, we feel that there could still be a chance for the film to drop in theatres according to the original release date. Still, since the film has been selected for a foreign film festival, it might actually be smarter to wait and release the film globally after getting some good reviews from international sources. For now, we will have to wait and see.
