Earlier today, it was revealed that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming directorial film titled ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ starring Alia Bhatt in the lead role is officially set for a theatrical release on the 25th February 2022 from the previously expected release date of 18th February 2022.
Adapted from investigative journalist turned author Hussain Zaidi’s 2011 non-fiction crime novel ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’ (a chapter), ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ follows the story of a woman named Ganga Harjivandas from Kathiawad and how she transforms into a formidable underworld power to reckon with and becomes a madame in the red-light area in Kamathipura.
Prior to the grand theatrical release of ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’, the film will make its world premiere at the Berlinale Special segment of the 72nd edition of the Berlin International Film Festival, which is to take place from 10th February to 20th February 2022. But the question is whether ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi’ is the only Indian film to be screened at the prestigious international film festival?
Well, the answer to the above question is a partial ‘yes’. We say so because an Indo-German documentary film namely ‘Ladies Only’ is also scheduled to be screened at this year’s Berlin International Film Festival under the Perspektive Deutsches Kino segment.
Helmed by Rebana Liz John, ‘Ladies Only’ follows the director asking passengers commuting in the ladies-only section of the crowded Mumbai trains about what angers them. The 82-minute-long film showcases a female perspective on what it means for several Indian women to board the train compartment at nine in the morning amidst their ambitions in a complex and money-driven world.
