A very recent survey has shown that Hoichoi is growing at a tremendous pace and has achieved what none of the other regional streamers from India could.
With Hindi dubbed shows and a very diverse range of content, the platform is now finding a good subscriber base outside West Bengal too. And the survey says that Hoichoi has achieved a 60:40 gender ratio for subscribers which is significantly better than the industry ratio of 80:20. This indeed proves that Hoichoi has been able to diversify the audiences but brings some concerns as well.
The streaming platform started as a hub for raunchy and erotic dramas and its stature was no better than ‘Ullu’ but now it competes with the major channels. The few recent stories from the platform were criticized by audiences for being too TV-soap-like. Even ‘Parineeta’ was said to be a wasted opportunity. We can all agree that the TV serial industry in West Bengal is one of the worst in the whole of India and the further OTT content stays from that the better. The majority of the audience for the soaps are female and if they are regularly visiting Hoichoi with the hopes of getting serial-like content there, it will affect the business of the platform in the long run.
It is good for Hoichoi that it has gathered a stable balance between the audiences, but if it tries to satisfy the television drama audiences with television drama-like content for more increment in subscribers, it will lose its place in Indian OTT.
