We often see Indian OTTs giving out rankings and viewership data in public and they leave us wondering how is it even possible. We saw this recently with Netflix India’s top 10 films where duds like ‘Nadaaniyan’, ‘Thandel’, ‘Daaku Maharaj’ were trending; Zee5 keeps sharing stats about watch minutes and now it’s Prime Video saying its latest direct to digital release ‘Be Happy’ is trending on no. 1.
These claims by OTT platforms in India doesn’t really seem to portray the actual scenario and probably are just a facade to boost their content. Not to say that the data is all entirely wrong but the algorithm of these streaming platforms is definitely designed to promote stuff which have some sort of popularity amongst the audience, good or bad doesn’t matter.
And if you are someone who trusts these rankings and data enough to stream them on the OTT platforms, you might be further getting trapped into the vicious loop of algorithm with more such below average suggestions ending up on your home feed.
To avoid this you need to stop getting pulled into the cyclone of ranking and other data given by OTT platforms and decide for yourself what you love to watch because honestly these data aren’t as reliable as you think it would be.
