This weekend has been really special for the Ape Franchise; the revival seems quite promising. Speaking of the opening numbers, the newest venture, “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes,” opened strong with $56.6M in the domestic market. Additionally, in the international market, it raked in a total of $129M.
But let’s focus on the franchise’s ratings.
The trilogy, which ran from 2011 to 2017, is widely considered one of the best trilogies ever made, as reflected in the ratings. It grew exponentially with each film. “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes” might follow this pattern too, but since it’s the first film in this new series, the audience is particularly critical.
Speaking of Rotten Tomatoes ratings, the classic trilogy began with “Rise of the Planet of the Apes,” which scored 82% on RT, but ratings improved drastically thereafter. The second film, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes,” released in 2014, received an extremely positive response from fans.
With an RT rating of 91%, this film significantly contributed to the franchise, and the final film of the trilogy left a lasting legacy with 94% on RT, making it the highest-rated film of the franchise and a truly memorable experience.
On the other hand, the newest addition, “Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes,” received an 81% on RT, the lowest in the franchise for the modern age. However, this isn’t a major concern.
Specifying the modern age is important because the franchise has had multiple runs starting from 1968. But will the 81% rating make the franchise suffer? Absolutely not. Reviews suggest that it offers a new experience and, considering its focus on the aftermath, the 10th film in the franchise has great potential to create its own universe.
