Talking about the biggest market for Marvel movies, though India isn’t the largest market for the MCU, it can give strong competition for the second spot in terms of fandom. Over the years, fans have been hyped about upcoming films, and Marvel has appreciated this enthusiasm.
However, Deadpool and Wolverine are showing a major exception.
Marvel appears reluctant to engage with the Indian market.
Evidence?
There has been very little advertisement and marketing, which is very odd for such major films. Even some big chains like PVR INOX or Cinepolis aren’t advertising posters for Deadpool and Wolverine, which is surely unusual.
Moreover, there has been no marketing from influencers or mainstream stars, and if it’s a Marvel movie, this is unprecedented. Fans were also upset that the Hindi trailer came out so late—it was released just a week ago, which is too late to start marketing.
Why do we have this theory?
Because the box-office numbers are out, and India is nowhere to be seen. If you think Indian people don’t watch Hollywood films, consider that for Godzilla vs. Kong, India was the third highest-grossing market, which is significant.
When a film like Godzilla vs. Kong makes more money in India than a Marvel movie, it is a concern. The Godzilla film focused on marketing, and it definitely paid off, while Marvel took it for granted, and it cost them.
