Over the past year or so, big-budget films have been failing. It’s not that audiences are deliberately showing their displeasure toward high-budget movies; they just haven’t worked. Apple TV has been a major victim of this trend, with its films underperforming at the box office and receiving unkind reviews.
But what about Netflix?
Netflix’s big-budget films are generating significant numbers, but overall, they are underwhelming. For example, Zack Snyder’s journey with Netflix has been rocky; his big-budget films failed to draw attention, and the reviews were far from kind.
Netflix is trying to attach big stars and directors to their projects, but this strategy hasn’t been the most successful so far. In their newest venture, they will work on “The Electric State,” a sci-fi project by the Russo brothers.
The move of two star directors from Disney to Netflix did cause some stir, and the film’s budget might leave you astonished. They are making a film with a budget of $300 million. For context, both parts of Rebel Moon had a total budget of $166 million.
In addition to the star directors, the film will feature a star-studded cast, including Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Ke Huy Quan, Giancarlo Esposito, Anthony Mackie, and Brian Cox.
If Netflix handles it well and audiences maintain controlled expectations for “The Electric State,” it won’t disappoint. However, as with all high-budget projects, expectations often skyrocket and can quickly plummet.
