Talking about Snyder’s run with Rebel Moon, it didn’t go as planned; in terms of ratings, it wasn’t just slapped with bad numbers but was kicked in the nuts with bad critical reviews. Even non-hardcore fans joined the party, and even as Snyder fans, hardly anyone will disagree with the points they make.
Now, see, all directors have their signature elements. For Snyder, it is the visual extravaganza and the expert use of slow motion, both of which are practically on steroids in the Rebel Moon franchise. Add Snyder’s mastery of BGM, and if you love these aspects of films, Rebel Moon is for you.
But there is a major problem with the franchise. Though it has some positives, Rebel Moon has nothing new to offer. Especially if you make a major comparison with Rebel Moon, both the films and Justice League Snyder Cut, the latter had its own beauty, its own positive notions. Besides these, the fans actually backed Snyder for his DC venture; here, his Netflix run is the best.
Talking about the quality of Rebel Moon, it follows the typical Snyder format. Visually, it pleases you, but any Snyder film is accompanied by cringey writing. Remember the famous ‘’Martha’ scene in BvS? The Rebel Moon films are also filled with some below-average dialogues.
And the ratings of Snyder films aren’t really a new phenomenon; they always have bad ratings on the platforms, except for Justice League Snyder Cut obviously. But for the rest of his career, he always had to struggle with the mass audience and the ratings. So, in the proper language of art, can we say – Is the film really misunderstood?
Even as a fan, I can’t really justify it and say that the masses are misunderstanding the film, it will be far from the reality. See, I just say the overwhelming hate is something which is unexpected, it isn’t the worst Snyder film, for the matter of argument, it is actually one of his good ones, if you manage to ignore the writing.
But keeping that side aside, it isn’t good either, calling it misunderstood is practically a crime. The first one was already criticized based on some fundamentals but Part 2 doesn’t really make a fundamental improvement anyway. The same slow mo and the same action sequence, the film had immense potential but it is burnt to ashes.
As a creator, Snyder also sets up an example of a major problem, fanboying a project will definitely result in something like this, something which is on steroids. Rebel Moon also loses touch from reality and produces something which is equally disliked by fans and critics.
See, to sum it up, the franchise is no good, at least the PG cuts. Can Snyder redeem himself with the director’s cut? That question is definitely far-fetched as fans are practically losing hope in him. Will it be drastically better? He did it once with Justice League, can he repeat it one more time?
