The South Korean war drama ‘Uprising’ has premiered on Netflix yesterday. The movie is of quite a high scale and executed well enough to create a stir all around the world, but it seems the movie is not being hyped enough.
The movie is directed by Kim Sang-man and written by Park Chan-wook and Shin Cheol. It is produced by Park Chan-wook as well. Yes the same Park Chan-wook that made films like ‘Oldboy’, ‘Lady Vengeance’, ‘The Handmaiden’ and more. ‘Uprising’ is a historical drama and was premiered at the 2024 Busan International Film Festival where it gathered much appreciation.
The movie tells the story of Chen Yeong and Jong Ryeo, who are slave and master in rank but share a deep friendship with each other. The two men grow up separately and find themselves against each other during the war of the Japanese occupation of Korea.
The cinematography of the movie is handled by Denis Lenoir and the music is given by Maurice Jarre. There are wonderful performances by actors like Leelee Sobieski, Hank Azaria, David Schwimmer, Jon Voight, Donald Sutherland etc.
The movie has all the elements needed to make it a big hit all over the world. Maybe audiences will find it after some time. But the buzz that it deserves is not there at all. ‘Uprising’ is getting good reviews from audiences but there should have been more noise about it on social media by now.
