Is OTT Becoming A Safe Hub For Experiments In India?

Is OTT Becoming A Safe Hub For Experiments In India?

There have been plenty of experimental movies which have come out from Bollywood but only few of them have tasted success. Due to this, filmmakers in India generally play it safe and do not take risks by trying something new. And hence every year we get the same old senseless action movies and then we all complain that bollywood doesn’t try anything new and different.

But this year has been a bit different. With most of the theatres shut, people’s attention went towards the other source of entertainment (no not politics). The OTT platforms came as a savior for the movie industry of India as well as of the general audience. With a plethora of content from all over the world, people were glued to these platforms for entertainment.

And this year, we got some of the most beautiful films from the OTT platforms. And one thing was clearly noticable that, with the ever changing nature of the industry, the makers are trying to create something new by experimenting with the content. This probably may be due to the fact of competing with international contents, but still bringing something new always excites the audience.

This year we saw movies like Cargo (Netflix), Bulbbul (Netflix), Kaali Khuhi (Netflix) which tried to bring something new for the Indian Market. And hence, these were appreciated. Apart from this we saw, Betaal (Netflix) a zombie thriller web series which was backed by SRK’s Red Chillies Entertainment. Although it was only the second zombie based content from India, it still found it’s audience and the crew were praised to bring a fresh take on the Zombie Genre.

Bollywood which has generally stayed away from the complex genre of Time Travel, delved into it in the form of Jl50 (SonyLiv). JL50 is a mystery crime thriller web series revolving around the concept of Time Travel. The four part miniseries has been one of the standout content from SonyLiv this year.

Apart from trying something in different genre we saw makers preferencing the ever
increasing love for web series. “Scam 1992 : The Harshad Mehta Story” can be the perfect example for this, up until now the biographical dramas were made like movies but Hansal Mehta’s directorial came as a web series on SonyLiv and shattered all the previous records. Scam 1992 is currently the highest rated Indian web series on IMDb.
While a similar approach was made by the makers of Taish as they released the movie as a six part web series simultaneously on Zee5.

With the audience loving these experimental OTT content, this has motivated the makers to take more risks in this platform and bring something new for the viewers. And seeing how the old style of content with routine plot are not getting the desired audience, it is high time that makers should keep bringing fresh content if they want to garner success.
