With the “more the merrier” model, OTT platforms are diving deep into sports streaming, blurring the line between entertainment and sports streaming. Netflix was the first major platform to dive in, and now Prime Video is following suit.
Prime Video struck a historic deal with the NBA, securing an 11-year partnership that will allow them to stream 66 regular-season NBA games, including an opening-week doubleheader, a new Black Friday NBA game, and all games from the Knockout Rounds of the Emirates NBA Cup, including the in-season tournament’s Semifinals and Finals.
Prime Video Channels will partner with the NBA to offer NBA League Pass, expanding access to games globally. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver praised Amazon’s reach, while WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert highlighted the benefits for women’s basketball.
Mike Hopkins from Prime Video lauded the addition of NBA and WNBA basketball to their sports lineup. Jay Marine, global head of Sports for Prime Video, expressed excitement about bringing 66 regular-season games, the NBA Cup, Play-In Tournament, over 20 playoff games, and NBA League Pass to Prime members.
This partnership starts in 2025 and enhances Prime Video’s sports portfolio, which includes the NFL, UEFA Champions League, NASCAR, NHL, WNBA, NWSL, and Wimbledon.
However, Prime Video might face some backlash.
It is being said that Prime Video has already used the NBA model of TNT in NFL pregame. But they won’t be stopping there. Prime Video will be hiring the TNT cast for NBA programming, including Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, Shaquille O’Neal, and Ernie Johnson.
