The hate from the Star Wars fanbase towards the ongoing “The Acolyte” Disney+ series was expected. However, the intensity of the show’s reception so far is surprising. It’s receiving widespread negative reactions, bordering on hate, rather than constructive criticism. Is Leslye Headland’s latest Star Wars project truly that bad?
We are not going to talk about “The Acolyte” being “too woke” because it does not make any sense. If you dislike the show because it has gay characters, trans people, or points out unnecessary race-swapping, then you don’t seem like a true Star Wars fan and might need to reconsider your views on representation. However, we have to discuss the show’s writing, which, needless to say, looks very poor.
Forbes has declared Episode 3 from the show “one of the worst Star Wars episodes ever made.” In fact, the majority of media publications and the franchise’s fanbase have criticized the episode. In this episode, we learn that Osha and Mae lived among a group of witches who were capable of using the Force. It seems like they used the Force to conceive the twins (it is the only logical conclusion here). These witches gave a bit of “Dark Side” feeling. Plus, it seems like this show is determined to make the Jedis bad guys. Yes, the Jedis are not perfect. We get that. But it seems like the show’s writers have no idea who the Jedis really are.
In addition, some of the dialogues in Episode 3 were laughable, especially the ones exchanged between the twins. Plus, the fight between Osha and Mae gets very annoying during the final moments of the episode. But the biggest adversary of this show is its writing. In the last episode, we witnessed Mae locking Osha in her room and burning her diary in a desperate attempt to stop her from leaving with the Jedi. The fire from the diary raged out of control, consuming their entire coven in an inferno. It took the lives of all the witches, including their mothers. The Jedis take Osha with them, believing Mae died in the flames. Sometime later, however, we discover that Mae somehow managed to survive the dangerous fire. This plotline does not make any sense.
Mae and Osha’s mothers and the rest of the witches knew how to use the Force. Did no one find out about the fire? Really? They all died just like that? Or are they still alive? The episode did not confirm their demises. We should also discuss Mae’s motivation in the show. She holds Osha and the Jedis responsible for the coven’s destruction, but in reality, she is the one who started the fire. Clearly, there’s more to this story, and future episodes will likely shed light on both the witches’ fate and Mae’s true motivations.
