Celebrated Bihar IPS officer Amit Lodha, the inspiration behind the hit Netflix series ‘Khakee: The Bihar Chapter’, has been charged with corruption, and suspended from duty. The primary reason for the Bihar Police charging and suspending him is his commercial involvement with Netflix, and “using his position for financial gains”.
For those who don’t know, Netflix show ‘Khakee: The Bihar Chapter’ is inspired by his daredevilry in capturing dreaded Bihar gangster, Pintu Mahto in the 2000s. The show is adapted from Amit Lodha’s book, ‘Bihar Diaries: The True Story of How Bihar’s Most Dangerous Criminal Was Caught’.
The Economic Offences Wing of the Bihar Police has filed a complaint stating that Amit Lodha used his position as an IPS officer to make a deal with the production house Friday Story Tellers while he was still serving as an IPS officer.
The complaint against Lodha adds, “Amit Lodha is not an established story writer neither he was authorised nor permitted to write book and use same for commercial purpose”. Bihar’s Special Vigilance Unit has booked Amit Lodha under IPS sections 120b (punishment of criminal conspiracy) and 168 (public servant unlawfully engaging in trade) along with sections 13(1)(b) and (13(2) of the PCA, pertaining to criminal misconduct by a public servant. The matter is still under investigation.
It must be noted that Netflix’s ‘Khakee: The Bihar Chapter’ paints the current Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar, in a not-so-flattering light. Though the series does not outright name Nitish Kumar as the Chief Minister who shielded the dreaded gangsters Pintu Mahto and his gang from persecution, the timeline of the events depicted in the series suggest his complicity in the matter – he was Chief Minister of Bihar then.
Now that Nitish Kumar is the Bihar Chief Minister again, maybe the truth bombs in Khakee: The Bihar Chapter are the reason behind the action against Amit Lodha. Interestingly, the Bihar Police’s Special Vigilance Unit that has filed the case against Lodha is a creation of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, purportedly to stem corruption in the ranks.
