We should say thanks to movies like Pokemon Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog for breathing a new life into the most critically butchered genre in filmmaking, video game adaptations. The first-ever video game based film, Super Mario Bros., came out way back in 1993. After its horrendous reception, this genre waited for more than 26 years to finally get a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes in the form of Detective Pikachu. Additionally, Sonic’s live-action debut was received well by fans upon its release. Now, we have Uncharted movie adaptation dispatching in February next year. How well will it execute itself? Is it going to be another stigma in the genre of video game movie adaptations? Let’s find out!
Uncharted is one of the most popular video games ever. Naughty Dog released its first instalment in 2007. More than 41 million copies of the gaming series have been sold worldwide by the studio. Nathan Drake serves as the protagonist here. He claims to share a lineage with the legendary explorer, Sir Francis Drake. Also, we have Victor Sullivan working as a mentor for the leading character. The duo finds itself on a series of dangerous and unpredictable adventures, leading them to discover several hidden treasures.
Despite all its best qualities, we cannot expect the Uncharted movie to repeat its mammoth success in the world of cinema. Things become more complex if we throw the ongoing pandemic and the horrible reputation of video game adaptations into this scenario. Sonic and Detective Pikachu earned decent collections during their respective theatrical runs. Still, they were not big enough to predict a new rise for the most notorious genre in Hollywood.
Early box office reports have predicted that the movie may collect around $230-300 million during its global theatrical run. But it needs to earn at least $400-450 million to get a decent profit against its $120 million budget. Both Sony and PlayStation uploaded the movie’s trailer on their respective YouTube channel a couple of months ago. However, it received a lukewarm response from the fans.
There’s no denying that the majority of the cinematic video game adaptations have underperformed critically and financially. It will be quite a challenge for Uncharted to exceed the expectations of moviegoers all around the world. Yes, Tom Holland is one of the most prominent performers in recent times. His latest MCU entry, Spider-Man No Way Home, is performing exceptionally well at the box office. He has all the hype and fan attention with him in the world. His presence may improve Uncharted’s theatrical performance. But we also cannot ignore the taboo surrounding video game adaptations in cinema. Only time will tell us how well Tom Holland’s upcoming adventure project will perform. Apart from Holland, it stars Mark Wahlberg, Sophia Ali, Antonio Banderas, and many more.
