While DCEU was taking its last breaths with Flash hitting rock bottom along with a much forgettable Aquaman and a SHAZAM sequel no one cared about, there were people who were bummed out as their favorite characters departed. And yes, James Gunn and Peter Safran are now ushering in a new and improved DCU; there are certain characters that just felt right, and to see them being recast is just heartbreaking, even as fans.
Wonder Woman was one of the very few hits from the DCEU. The movie set during World War II had a beautiful exploration about the origins of the character. Portrayed by Gal Gadot on the big screen The sequel that followed was much less of a fan favorite. Burden by the standards it set for itself and the studio’s reputation, it was expected to be a miss.
Still in December of 2022, a third part to the Wonder Woman franchise was reportedly under way. However, the project would not see the light of day. As Connie Nielsen, who played Queen Hippolyta, mentions, “Its crazy. I mean, Frankly, I don’t understand it,” referring to a third movie not being made.
Apparently, the director, Pat Jenkins, had plans that strayed from those of Safran and Gunn. And now, there are talks about the character making its next appearance in the prequel series title “Paradise Lost.”
In retrospect, it might have been a much better decision; with the face card of a character like Wonder Woman, it would have been a safer bet for the dying universe to earn a dollar, in comparison to the terrible performances of Aquaman 2 and Shazam 2. After all, the first movie had earned over 800 million, and Gadot was not in some kind of rift like Caval and Afleck over studio mistreatment.
