Pixar’s animated fantasy-comedy movie ‘Turning Red’, which had been released in theatres and on the Disney Plus OTT platform, has made an impressive debut on Nielsen’s weekly streaming charts. The film boasts a whopping 1.7 billion minutes of viewing in the top ten streaming movies list on Nielsen.
In doing that, ‘Turning Red’ has outranked Netflix’s star-studded sci-fi action flick featuring Ryan Reynolds and Mark Ruffalo – ‘The Adam Project’, which has delivered 1.36 billion minutes of viewing. Even if we consider Nielsen’s total top ten streaming chart that includes both movies and series, ‘Turning Red’ has topped that list as well.
Two more titles that have surpassed Netflix’s ‘The Adam Project’ (rank 4) are the historical fiction show ‘The Last Kingdom’ (1.42 billion minutes) and Karin Slaughter’s 2018 novel-based series ‘Pieces of Her’ (1.41 billion minutes), which are on the second and the third ranks respectively.
Another interesting fact with respect to the latest Nielson top ten streaming titles is that seven out of ten titles are steaming on the Netflix OTT platform. While two titles ‘Turning Red’ and ‘Encanto’ are streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar and one title ‘The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel’ is streaming on Amazon Prime Video. So, Netflix has won this battle on Nielson.
Coming back to the top-ranked title ‘Turning Red’, the animated comedy adventure film is set in the early 2000s period. The plotline revolves around a 13-year-old girl Mei Lee (voiced by Rosalie Chiang), who resides in Toronto with her stern and overly protective mother Ming (voiced by Sandra Oh). Her life takes an interesting turn when one day, she suddenly learns that she transforms into a red giant panda whenever she is running high on emotions.
