It seems like Mattel is looking to establish its own cinematic universe. And we are not complaining at all! Greta Gerwig’s Barbie is set to arrive in theatres globally on July 21. But Mattel will not stop after the upcoming Margot Robbie starrer. The globally prominent toy manufacturing company is looking to expand its presence on the big screen. According to The New Yorker, J.J. Abrams has provided an update regarding his upcoming Hot Wheels flick.
“For a long time, we were talking to Mattel about Hot Wheels, and we couldn’t quite find the thing that clicked, that made it worthy of what Hot Wheels—that title—deserved, Then we came up with something… emotional and grounded and gritty,” Abrams said.
Abrams’ production company, Bad Robots, entered into negotiations last year to produce the Hot Wheels project. The filmmaker himself is also a part of the film’s overall production and is keeping a close eye on the overall production process.
The latest update from Abrams has confirmed that the Hot Wheels movie will eventually arrive in theatres in future. Its script has not been written yet. But we have the duo of Nicholas Jacobson-Larson and Dalton Leeb for the scriptwriting duties.
The idea of creating a cinematic universe and printing loads of money is attractive, thanks to Kevin Feige (Marvel Cinematic Universe), who first started working on this idea. It makes sense why Mattel is also looking to do the same. Apart from Barbie and Hot Wheels, the toy manufacturing company is also prominent for delivering its products and services through top toy brands, such as Fisher Price, American Girl, UNO, Mega, Monster High, and more.
Right now, Mattel is busy preparing the release of Barbie, starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. The rest of the film’s cast comprises Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Rhea Perlman, Issa Rae, Simu Liu, and more. It will come out in theatres alongside Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer. More details about J.J. Abrams’ Hot Wheels movie will surface soon. Stay tuned for more updates.
