In a fantastic piece of update for diehard fans of ‘The Karate Kid’ film series, globally popular veteran actor and martial artist Jackie Chan is all set for his return for a yet-untitled brand-new Karate Kid movie. Previously, Sony had announced that the film will be released on 7th June 2024, and it was being described as the return of the original Karate Kid franchise. Jonathan Entwistle (‘The End of the F***ing World’, ‘I Am Not Okay With This’) will direct the new Karate Kid movie.
Back in 2010, Jackie Chan essayed the role of a maintenance man and a highly skilled martial arts expert, who takes a young boy (Jaden Smith) under his wing and teaches him kung fu to defend himself from school bullies. ‘The Karate Kid’ was a remake of the cult 1984 film of the same name but in the reboot, the goings-on took place in China.
As of now, the plot details for ‘The Karate Kid’ new movie are being kept under the wraps. It is also not confirmed whether Jaden Smith, who has now turned 24, will be reprising his role alongside Jackie Chan in the new Karate Kid movie. However, the rumor mills suggest that the story would ostensibly revolve around a proficient martial artist who relocates from Beijing to Brooklyn and teaches martial arts to an out of luck pizzeria owner. But nothing is confirmed yet.
The parent 1984 movie ‘The Karate Kid’ has gained a cult following over the years. The hit martial arts drama featured Ralph Macchio as Daniel LaRusso in the role of the underdog protagonist and his adversary Johnny Lawrence was played by William Zabka.
The success of the first film resulted in three sequels and the 2010 Jackie Chan film. Later, the Karate Kid universe was given a new lease of life after the arrival of the Cobra Kai spin-off/sequel series where tables turned as the goings-on are also narrated from Johnny Lawrence’s point of view in a setting where he becomes the underdog. The upcoming new Karate Kid movie was announced following Cobra Kai’s phenomenal streaming success. Let’s see whether the new film can live up to the same standards of that of the parent film and the ‘Cobra Kai’ series.
