Suriya‘s latest OTT outing Jai Bhim has garnered a good reception from the critics and the common audience alike. The hard-hitting social drama revolves around the life story of K Chandru, an earnest advocate who fought legal battles for the welfare of the backward caste population. He always took the side of the poor and the needy who were subject to oppression. After serving as an advocate for several years, Chandru was appointed as the Judge of Madras High Court. During his tenure as the Madras High Court Judge, Chandru disposed of over 96,000 cases, a staggering feat in every true sense.
Jai Bhim is based on true incidents that took place in Vriddhachalam in 1993. “The woman (Sengeni) in the film approached me, saying her husband went missing from police custody. I took up the case and fought for justice. The odds are stacked firmly against the poor and disadvantaged. This catapulted me to stand by their side even more so than ever,” Chandru says.
Chandru was appointed as the Permanent Judge of Madras High Court on the 9th of November, 2009. Prior to that, he took up several cases during his time as an advocate. A vast majority of these cases were pertaining to the backward caste population, who were subject to oppression and had nowhere else to go. Chandru didn’t take even a single rupee remuneration while operating on cases filed by the underprivileged. After taking charge as the Chief Judge, Chandru passed a few landmark judgments with the most prominent one being a common burial ground for everyone regardless of the caste.
