James Cameron is known for his bold, innovative filmmaking style, which often combines groundbreaking technology, epic storytelling, and strong emotional themes. The Terminator stands out for relying heavily on practical effects while delivering a tight and suspenseful narrative. On the other hand, The Abyss pushed the boundaries of visual effects with its pioneering use of CGI to create the iconic “water tentacle” sequence. Titanic was a massive technical and storytelling achievement, presenting a realistic and gripping portrayal of the tragic sinking of the ship. The first Avatar broke the mold with its revolutionary 3D technology and performance capture—elements that reached new heights in the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water.
Now, Cameron has revealed that he will make some “brave choices” for Avatar 3. Titled Avatar: Fire and Ash, the upcoming threequel will focus on the afterevents of The Way of Water.
In his recent interview with Empire Magazine, Cameron hinted that he would raise the stakes for Avatar: Fire and Ash. “We’re just starting to riff on it and twist it and turn it,” the Oscar-winner said. “It’s a tricky thing. We could be getting high on our own supply here, and everybody who looks at it goes, ‘Fuck, that’s not what I signed up for.’ But if you’re not making brave choices, you’re wasting everybody’s time and money. That alone is not sufficient to create success, but it’s necessary. You’ve got to break the mold every fricking time.”
This certainly sounds intriguing and exciting, as the third entry will introduce a brand-new clan, the Ash People (Mangkwan clan), led by Oona Chaplin’s Varang. The second part (2022) showed Jake and his family relocating to Pandora’s eastern sea, a region controlled by the Metkayina clan, also known as the Water People. After learning the ways of the jungle, Jake’s family was forced to adapt to the ways of the water with the help of the Metkayina clan. It will be fascinating to see how he and his remaining family members handle their interactions with the Mangkwan clan.
Cameron’s recent statement also suggests that another shocking death could be on the horizon for the filmmaker. The Way of Water delivered a gut-wrenching twist by killing off Neteyam (Jamie Flatters), Jake’s eldest son. Not only did his death come at an unexpected moment, but it also heightened the movie’s emotional impact on viewers. Neteyam’s sacrifice to save his younger brother will play a significant role in shaping Lo’ak’s character arc in Avatar 3. Lo’ak will carry the guilt of losing his brother, compounded by his father’s resentment, as Jake holds Lo’ak responsible for Neteyam’s death.
Avatar: Fire and Ash could feature the tragic demise of another important character—perhaps even Jake Sully. Who knows? Given Cameron’s history of bold storytelling choices, Sully’s death is certainly a possibility. Stay tuned for more updates.
