The original Avatar movie came out in 2009 and broke numerous box office records including emerging as the highest-grossing film of all time. In 2019, Avengers: Endgame dethroned it from the top spot. But Avatar’s re-release in March 2021 in China aided it in regaining the number one position. However, the James Cameron blockbuster has also endured heaps of criticism over the years from people. Many strongly believe that the movie is way too overrated. And now, the prominent helmer has defended his masterpiece in a recent statement.
Cameron lambasted the Avatar trolls in a recent talk with Empire: “The trolls will have it that nobody gives a s**t and they can’t remember the characters’ names or one damn thing that happened in the movie. Then they see the movie again and go, ‘Oh, okay, excuse me, let me just shut the f*** up right now.’ So I’m not worried about that.”
The acclaimed filmmaker also addressed the issue of long runtimes in movies in the era of the OTT world. “I don’t want anybody whining about length when they sit and binge-watch [television] for eight hours,” Cameron added.
Avatar: The Way of Water is set to hit the theatres in December this year. The film takes place ten years after the events of the 2009 original entry. Viewers will witness Jake Sully and his family going to extreme lengths to protect each other from new threats.
It is quite understandable why James Cameron is protective of Avatar. Additionally, he must be looking to keep ‘The Way of Water’ away from all the negative publicity till its theatrical release. Also, he has revealed that the 2009 film was heavily inspired by his beliefs.
