Oscar winning filmmaker James Cameron must still be riding high after the phenomenal box-office success of ‘Avatar’ sequel – ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, which grossed over a whopping $2.3 million at the box office worldwide. The success of the first two films must have further instilled a great deal of confidence in the makers about the future of the super ambitious franchise.
As per the latest update, ‘Avatar’ lead actor Sam Worthington recently revealed that ‘Avatar 4’, the sequel to the yet-to-be-released ‘Avatar 3’, will resume filming from next month, that is, from February. So, it looks like James Cameron is right on track for the theatrical release date of ‘Avatar 4’ on 21st December 2029.
Before that, ‘Avatar 3’, which has already finished filming, is slated to be released in theatres on 19th December 2025. After the third and fourth Avatar movies are out, ‘Avatar 5’ is expected to be released on 19th December 2031. Phew!! That’s why we called it a super-ambitious franchise!
We just wish that James Cameron should take a break now from the ‘Avatar’ franchise. Whatever work has been done until now is done, but the illustrious filmmaker should handover the directorial reins to some other filmmaker.
We seriously want a filmmaker of James Cameron’s calibre and universal appeal to invest his creative energies (as a director) elsewhere also. That is, in a different project altogether which is unrelated to Avatar. Perhaps a big-budget web series or another massively mounted action sci-fi film like ‘Terminator’, a cool spy action flick like ‘True Lies’ or an alien invasion thriller like ‘Aliens’. The possibilities are endless.
Not that the ‘Avatar’ films are not well-made, but by the end of this decade, wouldn’t you want James Cameron to direct the likes of, say, Tom Cruise, Robert Downey Jr, Will Smith, Tom Hanks, or Dwayne Johnson? But for that to happen, James Cameron will have to hand over his director’s hat to some capable filmmaker, for future Avatar films.
For instance, some time back, James Cameron had teased a potential Hiroshima film, an adaptation of Charles R. Pellegrino’s book titled ‘The Last Train From Hiroshima: The Survivors Look Back’. That could be an interesting project which ‘The Terminator’ director could take on instead of the future Avatar sequels.
