Superman: Legacy is undoubtedly the most challenging project in James Gunn’s directional career. The upcoming DCU flick’s reception (both critical and financial) will set the stage for future projects in Gunn and Peter Safran’s superhero franchise. The former recently had an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, where he talked about his approach to ‘Superman: Legacy while promoting his forthcoming superhero feature, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3. He appeared with some of the film’s cast members, including Chris Pratt, Sean Gunn, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff.
In January this year, Gunn confirmed that Henry Cavill would not appear as the Man of Steel in the DCU. Instead, he revealed that a new actor would don the cape in ‘Legacy’.
Gunn also revealed that he was offered a Superman film in 2018 by Warner Bros but decided to turn it down as he did not have a take on that project, not to mention the global prominence of the character.
“How can I make it different from the Superman movies that have been made so far, but also have it respect all the Superman movies that have been made so far? So it just took me some time to try to figure it out,” Gunn said in his interview. Additionally, he confirmed that ‘Legacy’ will not be a comedy flick like his previous superhero projects. He is determined to make it a sincere superhero film.
Gunn’s decision not treating ‘Superman: Legacy’ like a comedy project makes sense, as the superhero is a role model and a beacon of positivity for many fans. His unwavering dedication to protecting humanity and unshakable moral integrity put him in a different league than other DC superheroes. The character serves as a symbol of hope and justice in the comics.
