Fresh off the heels from the widespread acclaim of DC’s ‘The Suicide Squad’ spin-off series ‘Peacemaker’ which featured John Cena in the titular role, James Gunn has two highly anticipated Marvel projects in his directorial line-up. No prizes for guessing. These are the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ (GOTG-3) movie and the television special ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’.
While the latter is slated to start streaming on the Disney+ OTT platform from December 2022, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ is currently scheduled for a theatrical release in May 2023.
As per James Gunn’s interaction with Deadline’s Hero Nations podcast, the gifted filmmaker has recently revealed that ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ is going to be the last time when audiences will see the original Guardians team together. James Gunn has further said that the trilogy’s third film will be big and dark and that the film would take many Marvels fans off guard. The filmmaker also teased that the audiences could expect a new line-up for the Guardians team.
About GOTG-3, James Gunn has stated: “This is the end for us. This is the last time people will see this team of Guardians… I just want to be true to the characters, and I want to be true to the story and I want to give people the wrap-up that they deserve for the story. So that is always a little bit scary; I’m doing my best.”
Although this is not the first time James Gunn has remarked about GOTG-3 being the last edition of the trilogy which would comprise the original Guardians team. This implies that in case another GOTG movie happens, it would have new squad members. Having said that, it’s a virtual certainty that ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ will be the last outing for Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt) and ostensibly for his team members including Gamora, Drax, Groot, Rocket, Nebula, and Mantis.
