DC Studios’ co-chief, James Gunn, recently announced the new title of Superman: Legacy. His upcoming DCU project will now simply be called ‘Superman’. In his recent Instagram post, Gunn disclosed that he changed the film’s title after completing his final draft.
Gunn’s Superman will be the second entry to the DCU after the live-action Creature Commandos series, scheduled to arrive on Max in late 2024. Apart from the forthcoming David Corenswet starrer, the filmmaker will also work on Peacemaker, starring John Cena.
The last-minute title change of Superman: Legacy makes sense, as it always sounded like a sequel. Gunn’s forthcoming feature directional will be the first major addition to the DCU. And it should have a simple and straightforward title that promises a bright new future for the DCU.
Another problem with the previous title is the word ‘Legacy’. Gunn’s film has a young Superman, which makes the addition of ‘Legacy’ to the film’s title more confusing. The word legacy gives the feeling of an already-established Man of Steel, instead of teasing the superhero’s origin story. ‘Legacy’ would have been fine for an older Superman.
Many fans believed that ‘Superman: Legacy’ was Gunn’s way to honour the past incarnations of Man of Steel. But it should not happen. DCU must kill the past to move forward with a clean slate. In addition, it needs to prove that DC Studios is heading in the right direction with Superman. Yes, many DCEU supporters want Gunn to acknowledge Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel in some way. But Snyder is a thing of the past now. Warner Bros and DC Studios have moved forward. It is about time that we should move forward with them as well.
The word ‘Superman’ itself gives hope to people. The new title teases DCU’s bright new future. This reboot is a chance for Warner Bros and DC to rectify the mistakes they made with the DCEU. ‘Legacy’ kind of teased the movie’s connection with the past projects. The new title proves that James Gunn has his eyes on the future. Stay tuned for more updates.
