When it comes to attracting controversy, Netflix has been at the forefront among the digital platforms in India. Many of its shows in the past have had faced issues with the audience. Jamtara is the latest addition.
Jamtara – Sabka Number Aayega is the recent release on the platform. It is about the phishing scams in the heartland of India. The realistic presentation has been appreciated by many. The casting and the writing were very true to the setting. One of those dialogues has landed the show in controversy.
There is a dialogue in one of the episodes which contains the word – ‘Chamar’, an offensive word related and directed towards a caste. In the context used as a slur, its impact is further heightened. Considering how sensitive the communities are in India, the usage has naturally been condemned universally.
The social media is outraging towards the show and Netflix for going ahead with the dialogue. They want it to be removed or the show to be banned. Netflix has, in the past, been selectively agreeing or ignoring such claims. While it has removed a few, for other the freedom of expression and creativity in brought. We have to see where the current outrage ends.
