Jeremy Renner is open to reprising his role as William Brandt in the Mission: Impossible franchise. The Avengers actor first appeared as Brandt in Ghost Protocol (2011), followed by Rogue Nation (2015).
In his recent interview with Collider, Renner talked about his decision to leave the franchise. His brief marriage with Sonni Pacheco ended in 2015, forcing him to withdraw from the franchise. Renner received split custody, which restricted the amount of time he could dedicate to working on another Mission: Impossible project.
“I had to leave that,’ Renner said about the film series. ‘I was supposed to do more with them. I love those guys. I love Tom so much.”
He added, “We had so much fun, and I love that character a lot. It requires a lot of time away. It’s all in London. I had to go be a dad. It just wasn’t gonna work out then.”
We got two more Mission: Impossible entries after Jeremy Renner left the franchise – Fallout (2018) and Dead Reckoning (2023). While the former emerged as a blockbuster, the latter project struggled at the box office, collecting nearly $567.5 million against a mammoth budget of $291 million.
Renner’s decision to return to the Mission: Impossible franchise has come at the right time. The production for Mission: Impossible 8 is underway, with online reports circulating that the eighth part could be Tom Cruise’s final appearance as Ethan Hunt. Renner could feature in the upcoming MI entry, given that Hunt suffered the tragic loss of Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson) in Dead Reckoning. On the other hand, Grace (Hayley Atwell) has joined the IMF, but she’s a new recruit who needs training. This leaves Ethan shorthanded. Therefore, Brandt’s return in the eighth film would be a big relief for him.
The untitled eighth Mission: Impossible film is scheduled to premiere on May 23, 2025. Stay tuned for more updates.
