It’s a well-known fact that OTT platform Jio Cinema has been aggressively reinventing its content portfolio: right from streaming the massively popular IPL 2023 cricket tournament for free to acquiring the premium HBO titles like ‘Succession’ and ‘House of the Dragon’, and now Peacock’s global content, etc. Now, let’s see how many of the titles which streamed during the month of July clicked with the audience.
We have compiled a list of the popular Indian titles which were released on Jio Cinema in July along with their ‘Hit’, ‘Miss’ or ‘Super-Hit’ status. ‘Hit’ implies good title acquisition (based on popularity and/or critical reception), ‘Miss’ signifies a not-so-good title acquisition, and ‘Super-Hit’ implies a highly successful title acquisition by Jio Cinema (one bonus ‘Hit’ point given for ‘Super-Hit’ titles with total no. of titles remaining as per actual).
Appatha (Film, Direct-to-OTT) – Miss
One Friday Night (Film, Direct-to-OTT) – Miss

Licensed Films
In July 2023, there were no major Indian licensed films titles which got released on the JioCinema streaming service.
Web Series
On the web series front, the month of July for Jio Cinema was decent but not very good. Jio Cinema’s July series portfolio was more or less dominated by the ongoing investigative cop drama ‘Kaalkoot’, which turned out to be a really well-crafted show. Vijay Varma’s earnest performance is the show’s highlight. Such a splendid act after playing the antagonist in ‘Dahaad’. So, in a way, ‘Kaalkoot’ defied all expectations and was a massively pleasant surprise for OTT watchers.
Besides ‘Kaalkoot’, two more web series namely ‘Do Gubbare’ and ‘Ishq Next Door’ were released on Jio Cinema during the month of July. ‘Do Gubbare’ received decent feedback from critics and was admired by a segment of audience. That’s why the ‘Hit’ status. But that’s not the case with the second title ‘Ishq Next Door’, which received insipid reviews from many critics and viewers.
Direct-to-OTT Films / Others
As mentioned above, a number of direct-to-OTT films were released on Jio Cinema in July. However, except ‘Ishq-e-Nadaan’ and perhaps Priyadarshan’s directorial drama ‘Appatha’, none of these titles failed to impress the audience.
Manish Gupta’s ‘One Friday Night’ starring Raveena Tandon and Milind Soman didn’t create the required impact on the OTT audience. Moreover, the Marathi film ‘Unaad’ and the Gujarati romantic drama movie ‘Chandlo’ too didn’t have many takers on OTT despite some positive feedback from some people. Also, ‘Trial Period’ starring Genelia Deshmukh and Manav Kaul couldn’t impress the audience because of its predictable storyline as per some reviewers.
So, overall, there were three ‘Hits’, seven ‘Misses’, and no ‘Super-Hit’ titles for Jio Cinema for the month of July 2023. A disappointing month for the OTT platform barring the brilliant series ‘Kaalkoot’.
