Indian Premiere League aka IPL, a major sporting event of the country is happening right now and has the cricket fans glued to screens every day with its packed schedule.
Such is the captivating power of the game of cricket in India that majority of the public is basically watching nothing else except for IPL. In facts certain reports suggest that there is a 20% drop in viewership on OTT platforms because of this cricket league.
Although this drop is temporary and will most likely resume to normal levels post IPL. For the meantime it is affecting the streaming game quite a lot. But major OTT players are no amateurs and through past experiences are very much aware of this said impact and T hat’s the reason we have seen a slump on OTT in the past couple of weeks.
Not that the streaming services aren’t offering anything to the subscribers during IPL but we also cannot ignore that it is far and few.
IPL is two month long event and platforms just cannot go without any release. The best they can do is drop fewer Indian titles in the meantime to make the most out of their contents later when the timing is apt. This does not apply for the licensed films though which are coming and going on schedule.
While Netflix and Prime Video are still doing decently, it’s platforms like Zee5, SonyLIV, Aha, etc. that are suffering more due to this pulling away of audience by Jio Hotstar and IPL. Hopefully we will see a bunch of binge worthy stuff coming to OTTs post IPL, till then enjoy the good game of cricket.
