Today was the 47th annual general meeting of Reliance, which was adorned by the speech of Mukesh Ambani. The big man had some really interesting facts to share about JioCinema.
JioCinema has crossed 15 million paying subscribers. Yes, this is a huge feat. The platform introduced new subscription plans in April to compete against Netflix, Disney+Hotstar, and Amazon Prime Video.
You need to acknowledge the fact that JioCinema has crossed this huge subscriber base in a really limited time. It took about 6 years for Netflix India to touch 10 million subscribers, and if JioCinema did this in such a small window, then it has to be appreciated. We do realize that a comparison with Netflix India is not very fair due to the price difference but the gap is also very significant.
Mukesh Ambani highlighted that within just 100 days of the new subscription launch, the platform reached 15 million paying subscribers. He also shared that 62 crore Indians watched the second season of the IPL on JioCinema, making it the most-watched livestream event globally. Now, this number seems a little exaggerated as we don’t know the math that goes behind calculating this number but there is no denying that IPL is also a significant driving force to the success of JioCinema.
Reliance’s media business generated over ₹10,000 crore in revenue, with Viacom18. Stay tuned to Binged for all the interesting updates from the OTT industry.
