Yesterday was fun. India’s epic showdown against Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy broke all digital viewership records, with JioHotstar pulling in a massive 60.2 crore views. The high-stakes match in Dubai led India to a six-wicket win, with Virat Kohli stealing the spotlight. The excitement peaked when Kohli smashed the winning boundary, not just sealing India’s victory but also completing his 51st ODI century.
JioHotstar, the new streaming giant formed after JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar merged, made history with these staggering numbers. Right from the start, when Mohammed Shami bowled the first over after Pakistan chose to bat, viewership was already at 6.8 crore. The buzz kept growing, touching 32.2 crore during the innings break after Pakistan got bowled out for 241.
But the real frenzy began when India’s openers, Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, walked out to chase. As Virat Kohli took charge in the middle overs, millions stayed glued to their screens, pushing the viewership past 50 crore. And when he finally hit the winning shot, JioHotstar’s peak concurrency hit an unheard-of 60.2 crore.
But this did not happen without its fair share of complaints. There were several complaints against the glitches and buffering that killed the overall experience on the platform. Anyway, this was not very unexpected.
